RTI Contributes to National Debate on AI Regulation:

Professor Marina Jirotka and Dr Keri Grieman of the Responsible Technology Institute (RTI) were featured in the New Statesman’s June 2025 Spotlight on Artificial Intelligence. As part of a symposium exploring the question “Does the UK need an AI Act?”, they joined a panel of policy experts offering diverse views on the future of AI governance in the UK.

In their contribution, Jirotka and Grieman assess the government’s current investment-led strategy, cautioning that the absence of clarity risks overburdening individual sectors and undermining public trust. They contrasted the UK’s approach with recent developments in the EU and US, noting the global divergence in regulatory pace and ambition.

The UK needs clarity: for industry, for public trust and for the prevention of harm,” they argued, underscoring the need to address systemic issues such as bias, discrimination, environmental impact, and privacy. They emphasised the urgency of establishing a national approach to AI regulation—one that provides guidance, coherence, and accountability, and confidence to both the market and society.

This contribution reflects RTI’s broader commitment to responsible innovation and shaping governance frameworks that are inclusive, anticipatory, transparent, and aligned with the public interest.
